09 mars 2005, 13:12 Frostbite. Not the kind caused by the cold. Living in France did not provide a lot of opportunity to check out the punk scene. In fact, it didn't offer a lot of opportunity to check out anything other than the dance/house scene, which I am not a particular fan of. So, as you can imagine, it has been a while since I've been to a good punk show. I could hardly remember what they were supposed to be like. But Frostbite was a good reminder. I showed up in time to see Resistance, a local Winnipeg band, play their last song. I honestly can't remember what they sounded like. I was too busy examining the puzzle-piece wrist band I got for being over 18 and contemplating, since it was big enough to remove, how much I could sell it for. Then, I made my way over to the bar to buy a round, where I discovered that - again, since it was an all-ages show - I was only allowed to buy one drink at a time, which, it turns out, is a good reason not to drink a lot. Moving right along . . . Ghosts of Modern Man played next. Unfortunately, only one of the band members actually looked like he was having fun, so I spent most of their set watching 2 kids head butt each other repeatedly. They did have some pretty cool songs though, so I will have to buy the CD to check them out again. Then, Planet Smashers played. They managed to get the whole room to sit on the floor while they talked about how smelly their shirts were (apparently, they were quite smelly). They got tons of people out on the dance floor though, and everyone had a jolly 'ol time. Finally, the reason most had arrived, Guttermouth, were up. I was a little disappointed that they didn't play some of my favourites, opting instead to sing some garbage from Big Shiny Tunes and Detroit Rock City, but it was still a great time. It was loud, the crowd went nuts, and there was a lot of entertainment. There were concussions. There were broken noses. And there were fights. All in all, it was a great time. Of course, that doesn’t really tell you about the music itself, but all I have to say to that is check it out yourself.
