on tuesdays i wear black

I thought I’d shock you all by updating this blasted thing. I would have written sooner, but had nothing to add to the previous job hunt discourse. What I’ve done since October (May 2000, actually) to find a job: submit abstracts. What it has led to besides having several conferences to attend: nothing. Not that I expected otherwise. In fact, the response to my lack of effort has been surprisingly notable. So, in an attempt to return to my not-so-regular postings, I have decided to remove the constraint of a single topic. My probability for success will be much greater if I am allowed to ramble about whatever it is that inspires me.

And today, as usual, I am inspired by the snow. But since that is an all-too-frequent topic of mine, I will instead tell you about why I don’t own a car. I leave it up to you to decide the sincerity of my rationale

  1. It is a great way to save money – not just on gas and insurance, but also because I don’t go out.
  2. I am saving to buy a bike.
  3. I can pretend to be an environmentalist.
  4. I have never had very good luck in dealing with mechanic-types.
  5. I never have to be DD.
  6. I work through lunch, or rather, spend lunch hour trying to catch up on emails.
  7. It is a great excuse to get to try other people’s vehicles, particularly the 10-ton I got to drive last week.
  8. I am justified in occasionally wearing my toque at work.
  9. I get to read on the bus.
  10. Interesting and absurd people harass me daily.

Well, I think that is a pretty good start. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s topic – why my coworkers find Lent particularly objectionable.

P.S. I guess it was a sell-out
